1970
Construction of the airport is ordered
Late 1970. The former governor of the State of Mexico, Jorge Jiménez Cantú, ordered the Ministry of Public Works to build the Toluca City Airport, located in San Pedro Totoltepec, Toluca. Construction was completed during the administration of former Governor Alfredo del Mazo González in the 1980s.
1984
Inauguration of José María Morelos y Pavón Airport
Former Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado and former Governor Alfredo del Mazo González inaugurated the airport, named after José María Morelos y Pavón. At the time, it consisted only of a 3,000-meter-long runway, the Command Headquarters building, and the hangar of the State of Mexico’s Air Transport Directorate.
1985
The Naucalpan–Toluca Airport begins operations
In February 1985, the Naucalpan–Toluca Airport was inaugurated.
1990
A New Boost for International Air Freight
FedEx, the leading international freight company, began operations at the AIT in January 1990.
1991
Renamed Lic. Adolfo López Mateos International Airport
June. The Metropolitan Airport System project, which includes the airport, was presented, and the airport was officially renamed Lic. Adolfo López Mateos International Airport in honor of the former president of Mexico, who was born in the State of Mexico.
1994
The TIA joins ASA and takes over general aviation operations from the AICM
The airport joins Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA), and the AICM’s general aviation operations were transferred to Toluca.
2005
AMAIT Assumes Responsibility for the Operation and Management of the TIA
On September 7, 2005, Administradora Mexiquense de Aeropuerto Internacional de Toluca S.A. de C.V. (AMAIT) became the entity responsible for the operation and management of the airport.
2006
Modernization of the TIA Terminal Building
In 2006, construction began on a new, modern, and user-friendly terminal building. Work first focused on Terminal 1 for domestic arrivals; Terminal 2 was then built and began operations in March 2007.
2008
Record Growth Following Modernization
Toluca Airport reached 4.1 million passengers two years after its modernization.
2009
Inauguration of the third and fourth phases of the TIA expansion
In April of this year, former Mexican President Felipe Calderón and former Governor of the State of Mexico Enrique Peña inaugurated the third and fourth phases of the AIT expansion.
2010
The AIT Celebrates Independence Through Art
Bicentennial Mural. An art exhibition held to mark the bicentennial of Mexico’s independence.
2014
The TIA Hosts Barack Obama During the Leaders' Summit
In February 2014, former U.S. President Barack Obama visited the AIT on the occasion of the North American Leaders’ Summit.

TIA Strengthens Its Air Cargo Services
In April 2017, MCS Aerocarga began operations.
